HAWES JUNCTION/MOUNT ZION METHODIST CHAPEL
The chapel was opened in 1876, the same year that the Midland Railway Company opened the famous Settle to Carlisle railway, serving the local community of railway employees and farmers.  We are still going strong in 2026!
The Settle to Carlisle line was built between 1870 and 1876.  It was one of the most difficult railways ever to be constructed in the UK.  Steep, boggy, isolated and exposed countryside made for appalling conditions for the many navies involved in its construction.
The Methodists in this part of Cumbria were providers of welfare and spiritual help to the railway workers.
The Friends of Hawes Junction chapel warmly invite you to any of the above events and services. The building is looking very smart as it has been re decorated in the original Midland Railway colours.  Come and discover for yourself what a “little Gem” this Dales chapel is.
The chapel is located next to the A684, close to the Dandrymire viaduct and beneath the Settle to Carlisle railway  line and station.
